Weather gods are back, woohoo, woke up to this.
Had a bit of a tough morning not feeling too great as result of yesterday’s meal I think. Amusingly, I had ordered something where I had identified the word for vegetable in German so thought, great, something healthy (I’ve discovered food in northern Germany is pretty rich and portions are huge). I also saw the word for cheese but didn’t take much notice (mistake!). Anyway, what arrived was a casserole dish and quite possibly the most unhealthy representation of vegetables I have ever seen. There were vegetables but covered in about one centimeter of cheese and I think the veggies themselves were cooked in many slabs of butter. Some people’s dream meal, not mine. Need to learn more German fast!
Anyway, after about only 4km I gave myself a break of about 2 hours to try to sort myself out and read a bit, then was on my way. Really lovely and easy route today going through lots of sun-dappled forest, quite contemplative stuff really.
Went past this place on the way and thought of my lovely brother Marc and Nando.
This is one of the lovely things about running and walking, I notice things I would never see if in a car or even on a bike. Lots of little maps dotted around the place, taking the time to investigate the biker place for example and even seeing little remembrance signs for people that have sadly passed away on the road. The latter really makes me incredibly thankful for everything I have.
Good day in the end once I got going properly.
I also thought I’d add a little bit about the books I’ve read so far.
Started with the new Bridget Jones, Mad About the Boy. Simply brilliant in my eyes, I’ve been caught in many places laughing aloud, it’s brilliantly hilarious and anyone who is already a fan will love it.
I’ve also just finished Katherine Grainger’s autobiography, Dreams do Come True. What a wonderful woman, so inspiring. To come through the 3 silver medal Olympic experiences and then get that gold at London 2012. Not only that, she now has a PhD in criminal law, wow.
The book is great not only to learn about her as a person and her amazing achievements but also just for some life lessons. It’s amazing how much you can apply to everyday life really even for us mere mortals. So much about teamwork, analysis and communication. Personally, I think I could apply a lot of this to the workplace also and learn from it.
I think it’s another autobiography next. If anyone has any book recommendations, I have very varied tastes so please do share any suggestions you have either here or by other means.

For autobio/life inspiration you’ve got to read Chris Hadfield’s ‘An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth’ – just whipped through it in 2 days! Flipping awesome. Hope you can find it somewhere (he’s the guy that recorded Bowie’s ‘space oddity’ whilst on the International Space Station.
And if you fancy a Mexican/communist/WW2 and McCarthy-era novel with Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Trotsky as supporting actors you’ve got to get ‘The Lacuna’ by Barbara Kingsolver. Also recently enjoyed (got through it in about 5 days – the joys of sitting in a Greek village in the hills with no wifi!). Big thumbs up for both!
