#Day33 Cool bridges

Schleswig to Rendsburg – 30km
20C
Terrain: flat cycle routes and road

Uncle Peter dropped me off in Schleswig today and has then kindly picked me up again in Rendsburg. So kind.

Off on my own again tomorrow and am so very grateful for the time I’ve been able to spend with family. I was made to feel so welcome from the very first moment and will miss everyone. Hopefully we’ll see each other again soon.

Another easy day in terms of route, although daydreaming took me the wrong way so had to re-calculate slightly. Oops. Adding miles for no obvious reason is a little silly, note to self to pay more attention.

After a few hours, I arrived in Rendsburg.

I think every bridge I go across has become a ‘love bridge’ with padlocks everywhere. This was on a tiny pedestrian bridge. Like the diamante.

Walking around with Bob, a lovely chap called Bernd started chatting to me (we soon moved to English as my vocabulary ran out). He’d seen me as he was driving quite a few kilometers out of town and was surprised to see me again (I think he’d actually recognized Bob, not me!).

We got chatting and being a keen sportsman, him and his wife have actually done sections of a European long distance (walking) path from Flensburg to somewhere in Italy. I wasn’t aware of these paths but having now looked them up it seems there is a network of walking paths across Europe. Future projects!

When my Uncle Peter arrived we went to Rendsburg High Bridge (something my mum remembers from being a child visiting family), a very long and very high railway bridge. Get this though, it has a “suspension ferry” to transport 4 cars at a time plus people and bikes across the Kiel Canal, literally hanging from wires! Over 100 years old, a pretty amazing feat of engineering at the time. My Uncle also told me that the architect committed suicide the way before it was opened as he didn’t think it would work. Over 100 years later…this is how we crossed the river.

  1. Hi Vivian,

I hope everything is fine, and your knee does not make any problems.
Enclosed I send you the link to the homepage my wife created when we started some years ago, with a few tips from our experience to the hostels, restaurants, and just nice things that we have seen on our way.

I have seen on the plan that you will cross Müden / Oertze. The Youth-hostel in Müden is highly recommended, The host parents are very very likable, and the atmosphere is nice .

In Hamburg think I would recommend to stay in the Youth-hostel with the view over the harbor. On the weekend it can be a little noisy as many foreign young people stay here and after party on the Reeperbahn they come back quite late at night.
Directly at the youth hostel I think you will find the northernmost vineyard in Germany 😉

(It is recommended to reserve a few days in advance 😉

I am glad to have met you, because only those who have a goal will also find their way 😉
I wish you all the best, exciting impressions and a lot of nice people on your long way south.
