Wow, so I finally plucked up the courage to put my vivrunseurope project on facebook last night. I don’t really know what was stopping me, I think I just wanted to feel like I’d actually achieved some distance before raising the profile of this.
I woke up this morning to the most amazing support. Lovely messages, lots of ‘likes’, posts on twitter and friends even sharing my link with their friends. I felt so much love and support my heart was going to burst. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Lots of good vibes for today’s journey heading towards a part of Hamburg called Blankenese, a place my gran passed through on her journey.
Here’s an extract from her story in her own words (I’ve also included the Kiel Canal bit which I passed a couple of days ago but forgot to include):
“At one point we had to cross the Kiel Canal bridge where allied soldiers were inspecting everyone’s papers and of course we had none. We had met some German soldiers on the run in an ambulance who took us across the bridge saying we had scarlet fever and it was imperative to get us to Hamburg hospital as quickly as possible. To our surprise we were given an escort by the allies to the hospital where we were promptly put into isolation in the basement . We still found it funny despite the gravity of the situation. We were given something to eat, slept for a while and then escaped through the basement window with a warm blanket.
After we escaped we went to Blankenese where we asked a farmer if we could sleep in his hayloft that night. There was a thunderstorm that night and with moving around too much we fell through the hayloft into the cow byre. We smelled pretty bad so found a nearby stream where we washed our clothes and ourselves. We left our cases there as were unable to carry them any further.”
Really quite dramatic. in stark contrast, to cross the Kiel Canal, I simply used an underground/water footpath!
Hamburg is pretty big so when I entered I still had about 13km to go before reaching Blankenese which I eventually did (fixing a Bob puncture along the way – I’m getting quite adept especially after a masterclass from my Uncle Peter).
While the initial sign doesn’t necessarily suggest it, Blankenese is simply beautiful. The area around the station is very modern (Starbucks included) but you only need to walk 5 minutes to come across lovely little boutiques and beautiful (very large) houses with views of the Elbe river (clearly a very wealthy area). It’s very hilly with lots of narrow, cobbled walkways and plenty of stairs, not very Bob friendly! To see the views I had to sneak around a little.

Should be back in Blankenese on Friday to continue the journey but now for a rest day in Hamburg city center.
Just had to work out how to get into Hamburg with Bob, a problem soon solved.
I was standing looking at the train station map working out the best way to go, when a couple walk up and ask me about Bob. I started to tell them what I am up to and then they invited me to come with them into town as they had a multi-person ticket. Sonia and Elmar, such a wonderfully sweet couple. Elmar even helped me carry Bob (pretty heavy) and they gave me a map of Hamburg. I also realised a couple of minutes into speaking with them that I was actually, wait for it, having a conversation in GERMAN!

In between what I can only describe as April showers but in August, I had a good look around Hamburg city centre and am going to rent a bike tomorrow to get around.

So far, I really like Hamburg. It actually reminds me a little bit of London (not to always be comparing) only in the sense that there are many very distinct districts with very different people and vibes. I’m staying in an Airbnb bordering the St Pauli and Sternschanze areas, seriously hipster cool. Not somewhere Bob and lycra-clad Viv fit in particularly this afternoon so looking forward to walking around in ‘civilian clothing’ tomorrow.
A good day and another mini-milestone on my gran’s route. The next big stop is going to be Celle (about 120km away) where she ended up and met my grandfather. I’m going to try to do a little research while I’m there into people she may have met but not sure how successful that will be. Worth a go though so if anyone has experience of this type of thing in Germany, please let me know.
