After a beautiful start this morning, the morning light on the water, I was off on a pretty simple route today, still heading towards The Netherlands.
I made a bit of a mistake when I left Celle, saying it was only 200km to The Netherlands border, WRONG, over 300 really, oops. And tonight is my last night in Germany! I’m in a place called Alpen – don’t think there is any connection with the cereal!
The great thing is that I’m now having basic conversations in German! Still lots to learn but it feels like a small achievement given where I started off (with my mum and I falling into fits of giggles every time I tried to do anything over the phone).
I have so many wonderful memories of people and places that I will never forget. Definite highlights have been spending time with my wonderful German family. I really feel that we are closer and will see each other again soon, I can’t wait!
Following my gran’s journey as a refugee really meant a lot to me. Reaching Flensburg (where she had landed by plane and then started walking to Celle) was the first big milestone and felt like a real achievement and then arriving in Celle (where she settled and met my grandfather before moving to England) was simply amazing and still makes me quite emotional. Then this past week in and around Munster has been wonderful with some of the most friendly and generous strangers I have ever met.
I’m ready to enjoy my last day in this beautiful country.
