#Day60 I’m in Belgium!

Thorn (Netherlands) to Genk (Belgium) – 36km
20C
Terrain: cycle paths and country roads

Such a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky when I set off this morning.

Less than one kilometer in I crossed the border into Belgium (4th country on this journey), or at least I think I did. Strangely, there wasn’t a ‘Belgium’ sign but one that welcomed me to the region of Limburg (which is apparently in Belgium).

I’m not sure whether the lack of border sign was because I was on a remote country road or because I was crossing into Flemish-speaking Belgium, so there’s no need for an official sign?

The good news is there still appears to be cycle lanes in Belgium so fingers crossed they continue.

A few more hills today which, for some reason, really took it out of me. When I finally arrived in Genk, I really needed the rest and have essentially spent the rest of the day eating, trying to refuel my body. Hopefully it’ll be rearing to go again in the morning after a good night’s sleep.

It’s a pretty modern place architecturally, lots of new builds and shops. The market place has a bit of a trendy vibe going on.

In a couple of days, I’ll be in the French-speaking part of Belgium and then I can talk to people! Can’t wait, although it may slow down my progress as they might not be able to shut me up!

    • Dear Heidrun,
Thank you for your lovely note and I apologise that my German isn’t better. I think the last time we met, I was 18 years old so a long time ago!
I hope you are well. It was great to see Peter and the family when I was near Flensburg and then Peter helped me again in Celle, he is wonderful. He also told me that your husband Klaus was cycling from your house to their house, a family of travelers!
Thank you again for your kind words of support.
      All the very best,
      Viv
