I’m feeling very proud and honoured today. A social media movement called #voltwomen posted about me and this vivrunseurope project (raising awareness for the plight of refugees and funds for the British Red Cross) on Instagram. A complete and wonderful surprise.
The voltwomen movement was started by three women, all in the urban running community. Nanna, Clemence and Julie. Its aim being to elevate and promote women’s running. Their tumblr site states: NOT A CREW, A MOVEMENT, AN IDEA, GOALS.
I’ve been following this group since its inception and with so many inspirational women involved, I really do feel honoured and humbled.
I clearly wouldn’t be here without my friends and family but the starting point of this particular adventure was probably when I joined a running community called Run Dem Crew in London about a year and a half ago.
RDC was founded by the wonderful and inspirational Charlie Dark (runner, poet, dj, motivational speaker – a man of many talents). The positive atmosphere and ethos that Charlie has created in this crew is something I have never experienced before. It’s about celebrating achievements, big and small and being the best that you can be while helping others to do the same. Something I wholeheartedly subscribe to.
This wonderful group of people and Charlie, largely without knowing it, helped me through a very difficult time in my life. A few hours each Tuesday evening when I felt good and was surrounded by positivity helped pull me through (along with my amazing family and friends). Heading out every week to discover the city that is London in a very different way, running with people from all walks of life, all there to have fun and support one another.
It was also thanks to RDC that I started running regularly, without which I wouldn’t have even contemplated this project or traveling to Palestine in April to take part in the marathon there. I am so incredibly grateful.
This short film has recently been posted about the urban running scene and features Charlie along with people from the Paris and New York running crews.
Back to today, it was hot! Not sure how long this weather is going to last but tomorrow is supposedly even hotter. I need to get out as early as possible to get those miles in. Not complaining through.
A shorter distance today but I still felt it, I think my legs could still feel the effects of yesterday’s sand incident!

I have read your recent reports with attention, because I grew up in the country you running through. Exactly in Mont de Marsan. In the summer we went nearly every weekend to the sea. Did you know that the huge pine forest you are traveling thru was planted by Napoleon? Previously it was only a giant swamp. Napoeleon needed wood for his ships ;-). Formerly the shepherds have walked on stilts, not to sink into the swamp.
The Bay of Biscay is the epitome of the sea for me. Rough and powerful. I’m assuming that you will running over Biaritz and St. Jean de Luz to Spain. Biaritz is the “Monaco” of the nineteenth century, and St. Jean de Luz is a beautiful Basque fishing village. If there are some waves you must go on the rocks de la Vierge, so you will feel feel the whole force of the atlantic sea.
