Barcelona to Sitges – 44km

Terrain: road, second half pretty hilly
The longest day so far! And pretty eventful.
Leaving Barcelona, I ended up on what can only be described as a dual carriage-way so took the hard shoulder. Not sure whether I was supposed to even be there, I spotted a motorway access sign saying no pedestrians so by deduction…
Then all of the sudden there were works and no hard shoulder for about 200m. I explored the option of going through the work site, a no go. So my only choice was to play chicken (not something I recommend kids!). I waited for a gap in the traffic, then pegged it and forced car/lorries to change lanes. Made it to the other side, phew!
After that the next 10km or so was pretty easy. Flat, lots of pavement and even some sea, yay!
THEN…oh my goodness. About 18km on a coastal road to Sitges. Think, narrow road with a concrete barrier preventing Bob and I plunging to the rocks below plus hills with lots of hair pin bends. Fun!
I just tried to stand tall and hope people saw me, I was definitely an unexpected obstacle and a couple of lorry drivers were not pleased at all, neither was I!!!!
Anyway, I made it! It was beautiful. The sea to my left and rocky hills to my right. Difficult to appreciate when preserving life but all the same. Thankfully it’s a different type of route tomorrow.
Let’s see how my legs feel in the morning after today’s escapades. Achilles is still giving me issues when I run so I’m having to walk more, albeit I didn’t have much choice on the second half of the route today. Frustrating all the same but at least I’m managing to progress, just more slowly.
