Firstly, Happy New Year to all! Wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2015. Thank you for making 2014 so amazing, now for more life adventures in 2015.
I had a wonderful time with family over the break and yesterday took the bus back to Almeria to continue this challenge from where I left off before Christmas.
I was back on the road today after a few days rest following my stint further along my route between Christmas and New Year.
It started off beautifully, along the sea with cliffs and some beautiful views. Wonderful.
I was in more built up areas for a lot of the way today and where I’ve ended up is apparently one of the fruit and vegetable growing capitals of Spain. Given the number of growing houses (as far as the eye can see in places) and that I’ve seem similar areas in Southern Spain I really do think a significant amount of Europe’s fruit and veg must come from here.

I was listening to my BBC newshour podcast today and as is often the case, there was a story about refugees, the backbone of this challenge. In particular, those 300 to 400 people that were found drifting in a boat in the Mediterranean that had been abandoned by its crew. Mostly Africans. As we know, many people die trying to reach Europe in this way. And it’s not like they don’t know about the risks that they are taking. The sad reality however is that the risk is worth it given the horrific atrocities at home. Heart breaking.
The podcast also mentioned that the first port of call once they had been rescued by the Italian authorities was a Red Cross tent where the refugees would be looked after initially.
Especially after having spent such a wonderful time with my family over the holidays, this really hit home. How fortunate we are. Raising the funds that I have managed to raise so far for refugees makes this challenge so worth it. While it may not be much in the grand scheme of things, every little bit helps and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank those that have been able to contribute.
Some of these people have remained anonymous but I am incredibly grateful to everyone and am sure these funds are going to a worthwhile cause. The Red Cross definitely does some amazing work.
