#Day1 Of the journey

Unieradz to Trzebiatow, 22km
20C
Terrain: Flat cobbles and road

Woke up with serious butterflies. Felt like a lot was culminating in today. This is about turning a corner for me so the significance is quite profound.

Having driven to Unieradz from where we were staying, off I went from that lovely church along the cobbled streets.

Conditions for me are clearly incomparable to those faced by my gran when she had to leave to escape the soviet invasion.

It took months for me to get all of my things organized including route and kit. So it’s difficult to imagine what it must be like when you have to grab all of your ‘important’ belongings and escape by any means possible as quickly as you can. For her, it was by plane and she didn’t know what had happened to her family.

I just can’t believe that people are put into that situation every day. Think of Syria, CAR, Sudan just to name a few conflicts that are causing people to flee from their homes. Almost worse is Gaza that is currently undergoing an offensive by the Israeli government and military. These people can’t even escape and innocent people are being killed as a result. I was recently in the West Bank and witnessed the injustices there. I actually went for the Palestine Marathon #righttomovement which I thoroughly recommend! An amazing and uplifting event.

I know that was as little heavy but supporting refugees through my Red Cross fundraising is one of the many reasons I am undertaking this run.

Back to the run, it has been a really beautiful day with many working farms and animals to contend with for the first 10km or so. Then quite a busy road, only one abusive white van driver but everyone else gave Ironman Bob and I a wide birth, reassuring given it looks like I’m running with a baby, pretty random really. I would be considered a very irresponsible mother!

First day running with Ironman Bob also! I hope he’s going to be a great companion.

Relaxation time and prepare for tomorrow.
