#Day-1 Arriving

Having flown to Berlin with my mum, we rented a car to head straight to Unieradz, where gran grew up. Turns out it really is in the middle of nowhere and without a car, I’m really not sure how I’d have found it.

It’s difficult to describe the feelings that arriving had on me/us but it was very emotional. My gran was one of the most special people in my life before she passed away in January 2012 and just being somewhere special to her meant a lot.

Going past the sign telling us we’d arrived in Unieradz and waiting for a few chickens to cross the cobbled road (yes, the whole area for about 10km around is beautifully cobbled – just not on the picture below!) we soon came across the famous church (famous to us as we’d always had it on our wall at home), also my start line. To think that she had been there with her family all of those years ago (and had never returned after having escaped). It was very special and to share it with my mum who had never been there either was amazing.

Such a beautiful little church with a wooden front. We found it difficult to find much information on it which is a shame but it appears to date back to 13th century.

My mum’s cousin Peter kindly sent us a plan showing where gran lived, now an overgrown field.

Unieradz has gone from over 300 inhabitants in 1945 when it was part of Germany to only about 5 houses now. In fact, following the Soviet invasion, the whole area became part of Poland and Germans living there were expelled. Not something I knew much about but some quite traumatic history.

So so pleased that I’ve finally made it to gran’s birthplace and hopefully in some way, my Gran knows and is happy we were there.
