Terrain: hilly forest trails and road
Started off nicely today, again the sun is shining beautifully. I asked if this is always the case and am assured not but if so, it’s a great holiday destination. Warm but not too hot, lots of nature and very reasonable prices.
First up, realised that Ironman Bob could multitask (mobile clothes line).
Forest trails started off lovely.
However, this was about to be subdued somewhat. When I say that I love running forest trails, today I realised this is conditional. Sandy trails + hills + Ironman Bob = the enemy. Like pushing Bob through treacle.
The enemy
My sweaty self attracting blood sucking flies to me (haven’t worked out what they are but not friendly), hmm. Then, I then come across a fallen tree. In my wisdom, I decide I can lift this! A not very herculean attempt resulting in failure. Only one option, for Ironman Bob and I to play limbo with the tree, success!
Very happy to find tarmac again.
I knew I was going to have to cross some water today to reach Swinoujscie and kind of hoped it would ‘just work itself out’. Turns out there is a free ferry so Ironman Bob had his maiden voyage.
Swinoujscie is fairly large and living in London, it’s funny how I immediately feel more at home. Maybe it’s the anonymity and not really getting a second look with Ironman Bob (having already had “where is the child?” questions, understandably). It’s a lovely place, everything you would need and a beach (again).
Through a few strokes of luck and a little bit of German, I also found camping gas today, in a sailing shop of all places. After looking forward a week, feeling very pleased with myself.
So Swinoujscie is where gran was in a plane crash, just outside the town. Here’s an excerpt from her story in her own words:
“I was lucky to have a pilot as a friend who literally grabbed a two seater plane and took off with me before lunchtime. We headed west along the coastline until one of the plane’s propellers broke in a bad snowstorm and the plane crashed in a field near another airfield at Swinemunde (now Swinoujscie). I was knocked out and woke up in a Red Cross station. I had one small suitcase with a few winter clothes. My friend the pilot had also survived the crash and had been to ask after me while I was still unconscious. He the left and I never saw him again. The next morning I took another plane with a friend I had left standing on the airfield at Kolberg. We kept heading westward and north and I finally ended up on an airfield near Flensburg.”
I’m now only a few kilometers from what is now the German border so will be crossing over tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
