#Day12 DDR and Swimming

Jarmen to Demmin – 24km
28C
Terrain: cycle paths and roads

Weather still holding up but it’s hot. I think it hit 30C today so trying to move when it’s a bit cooler. Out the door at 8 today with the aim of reaching Demmin – achieved.

Due to heat, have now lost all fashion sense whatsoever although some might argue I never had any anyway 🙂

About an hour in I came to a small museum about the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik, former East German state). It’s run be a chap called Fred, got chatting in mix of German (mostly I’m pleased to say – audiobook definitely helping) and English. He must have had about 50 old type-writers in the store room and the museum itself along with loads of artifacts from food and drink to televisions, clothes etc. Really interesting little place in a small village called Tutow. Loved the outside decor with old sowing machine legs and the German flag hoisted and painted everywhere. Quite a character.

Oh, got stopped but the police today. Terrified I was going to be told that Ironman Bob and I couldn’t take the road, fortunately they simply explained that I had to travel facing the traffic. While this may in theory be safer it certainly doesn’t feel it! Seeing cars hurtling towards you is not my idea of safe but can see their point and will try to abide by German law while I’m here.

Very hot me

Arrived in Demmin and thought I’d see to Ironman Bob who had become a little squeaky/annoying.  Garage spotted, oil sprayed by mechanic and Bob (and me) is happy again.

After settling myself in Demmin and having something to eat, my first bratwurst, look what I found! ‘Natural’ water swimming. Made sure I used the water slide, definitely the oldest person on there, just can’t help myself.

One thing I’ve noticed a few times now is that allotments seem just as popular here as in the UK (not something I see much in France for example). Walked through a really lovely one after swim, some serious gardeners here.

Huge storm outside right now so hopefully it might cool things down a little.

Ran a fair amount today and legs seem ok but feet were really aching by the end. Guess it’s the accumulation.

Looking at my route, there aren’t many decent sized towns over the next few days, looking forward to it.
