#Day21 Chickens and a ferry

Klutz to Travemunde – 24km
23C
Terrain: road and offroad

The theme of this morning was definitely agriculture. I saw more tractors than anything else and lovely little agricultural villages. Even made friends with some chickens who scurried over when I started taking pics.

In fact largely where there aren’t buildings or forests, there are crops and grazing fields but I guess this is case across most of Europe and explains why politicians desperately try to protect it, largely at the expense of developing countries’ agricultural exports (I have my own opinions on this but I think it’s for another day).

So, similar to when I arrived in Swinemunde a few days ago, the only way to reach Travemunde is by ferry across a very small tributary so Bob got his second ferry trip.

Travemunde is very much a sea-side resort with a lovely harbour and small beach.

I’m staying at an Airbnb tonight run by a lovely lady called Doris who is American and whose grandmother had a similar story to mine in that they had to escape what is now Poland (was Germany) due to the Soviet invasion in 1945. They ended up on an open-topped freight train to Travemunde where they settled. The train journey took 10 days for a distance that can be covered in a day by car now. Sounded pretty horrific with children dying along the way, thankfully they survived.  So sad to think that people are in similar situations now particularly in Ukraine and Palestine (although in the latter, with nowhere to go). We are all human beings and for me, it’s as simple as that (perhaps very naively).

There are a few other people staying here in fact one young boy from another family has kindly given up his room so that I can stay here for the night! Some of the other guests speak English and are lovely. Such a shame not being able to speak to people in their own language but English is the only way for any meaningful conversation at this point! Really lovely to have a few chats, trying to put the world to rights.
