These few days in Celle have been great and I’ve even had some very unexpected success with family research.
I have to say that my Uncle Peter who came down for a day to help out was an absolute godsend, an amazing help.
I was really interested in two things:
– finding out where my gran lived as we didn’t have an address in Celle
– possibly speaking to someone who may have known her. I know that she lived with a lady called Irmgard Bose so wanted to see if there were any avenues there.
So after going to the townhall in Celle, we were sent to the archive centre.
Having very low expectations, they were blown out of the water! The chap there came out with her registration card and here it is! It not only has one address but three different addresses.
He was also able to confirm that the last place she lived in Germany was Irmgard Bose’s house but couldn’t show us Irmgard’s registration card as she wasn’t a member of our family. Shame but a massive success all the same!
So we spent some time going to her different addresses and taking photos, really cool!
To follow the other avenue I’d found three people with the surname ‘Bose’ in the German phone directory. My Uncle Peter helped me again by calling them and it turns out the last person he called was a relative of Irmgard Bose (nephew!) however she had passed away a long time ago and the house at address Texas 6 (on the card) had been sold. He told us there wasn’t really anyone we could speak to that would be able to help but all the same, we obtained some useful information!
I’ve spent the rest of my time in Celle wandering round (trying not to walk too much but have never been very good at staying still), eating and trying to get some culture in.
Check this out, it’s essentially a free library in the centre of town (there are books inside that people can just take with them and contribute to). What a great idea!
Celle is a very quaint and pretty place.
Went to visit the local art museum which had a small collection of contemporary art and some quite trippy light installations.
I also had this amazing present delivered from my friend Livs, I now have special challenge t-shirts! (there is also a blue one) What an amazing surprise, they even have my fundraising link on them! So thoughtful and very happy.
After a bit of rest tomorrow I start Stage 3 of this journey towards the Dutch border. Really looking forward to getting going again.
