#Day 47 Bit of a hangover

Celle to Bissendorf – 30km
19C
Terrain: cycle routes and road

Not a real hangover! Sorry to disappoint (I haven’t gone AWOL and been on a complete bender!), it’s more metaphorical really in that I experienced what I can only describe as a Stage 2 hangover today.

The main focus for stages 1 and 2 of this journey was simply to get to Celle where my gran had settled, I hadn’t really thought past that. I also don’t think I realised how much of a driving force following my gran’s journey as a refugee had been.

So having started the day and the beginning of Stage 3 feeling a little morose, somewhat inexplicably at first, I soon understood why. After a little self-analysis, I realised how important purpose and goals are for me so I needed to readjust them slightly.

In terms of purpose, this journey is still dedicated to the wider cause of refugees and what they go through daily (as I’ve said before, I strongly believe that everyone deserves a place they can call home) along with pushing personal boundaries. For the next goal, it’s arriving in The Netherlands (the end of Stage 3 – approximately 200km from Celle).

I know it’s all very simple but I think  just going through this in my head has helped.

Another plus was lots of forest today so lovely fresh air. Not so many cycle paths here though, about half of today was on normal roads, just needed to stay a little more alert.

I also listened to an interesting podcast about a chap called Adam Scully Power. Basically, he has a corporate job, four kids and in his late 30s decided he needed to get fit and lose some weight. So he started a plant-based diet (after watching a documentary called Forks over Knives – which doesn’t seem to be available in the UK). I think this means lots of fruit, vegetables and unprocessed foods (need to do a little more research).

With loads of extra energy (which he attributes to the diet), he started running and running and running. Basically within a few months, he’d run a 110 mile race! He then ran across the state of Massachusetts, over 160 miles!!! (and as a tribute to those who had passed away in the Boston Marathon last year). Truly phenomenal what human beings are capable of!

Here’s a link to his story: http://espn.go.com/sports/endurance/story/_/id/9525945/endurance-sports-scully-power-run-163-mile-pan-mass-challenge

Not sure this way of eating has the same effects on everyone and these things always seem a little extreme but I have to say I’m interested (but maybe a little lazy to go all the way…).

As a final thought, a quote I came across today that touched me:

“Become the change you want to see” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
