Saint Aubin de Blaye to Margaux – 29km

Terrain: flat with a dedicated cycle route (!) for part of the way.
Dad, I’m in Margaux!!!! (think bottle in Hong Kong 🙂 )
It’s been quite a day. The first part was fabulous. It started with this.
I then had a dedicated cycle path for 14km (like in Germany), bliss!
The slight irony of today being that I did a short video on nutrition and then proceeded to get it all wrong and feel a little rough for the rest of the day. That’s what happens when you run out of bananas.
Anyway, I arrived in Blaye at lunchtime where I needed to catch a ferry to cross the estuary and then had to wait around until 4.30pm for the next one.
Then…crisis struck! Bob’s front wheel was hit by a taxi! Completely warped…arrgghhh!
After a slight panic, I found out that there was a bike shop about 500 meters away. So Bob hobbled along on 2 wheels and get this, the shop had a wheel that was the right size, what are the chances?! So after a couple of hours in repair hospital I picked him up.
Plus, he’s had his tires pumped and break tightened, as good as new!
Crisis averted, I can continue onto Bordeaux tomorrow, phew!
I then had what for me was quite a special experience. Needing to spend a penny as they say, I stopped at the public toilet. Asking the lady sat there whether I needed to pay, she said, people leave what they want.
I then proceeded to have the most amazing conversation. This woman who was partially blind and had worked looking after the toilet for 22 years was in fact incredible. She’d travelled to the west coast of America, Shanghai and even the west cost of Africa (Ivory Coast and Senegal). A woman with such worldly knowledge and compassion for her fellow humans and willing to travel the world alone despite her real handicap, seriously stepping outside of her comfort zone. I was quite frankly blown away and incredibly touched by her. The old saying ‘don’t judge a book by it’s front cover’ couldn’t be more true. I love these special moments that life brings.

Then off to my 15 minute ferry ride and a slow jaunt to Margaux.

Some busy roads this time and it was beginning to get dark, not too pleasant. So hopefully I won’t need to repeat that too often.
Bit of a mixed one today BUT tomorrow I see my Mum and Jo, yaaay!!!
