Dad left this morning which was tough. We don’t get to spend much time together and we just had the most wonderful couple of days talking about life, the world etc. I feel so lucky and grateful that he was able to come and meet me. It really means the world to me. Family love is simply the best.
The latest news is that my body is now officially angry at me. It’s taken over 2,700km but it’s not happy.
The night before last, I suddenly lost feeling across the top of my left thigh. Bit freaky and it still isn’t back. When we were in Tarragona yesterday, Dad and I agreed that I should try to get it checked out and by chance there was a hospital just down the road. How I hate going to those places.
So two and half hours of sitting (not too bad I suppose) and I walked in to see the doctor who, get this, is an ultra runner and has done the UTMB (running geeks)! Couldn’t quite believe it.
While examining me, he happened to press on my achilles which lead to a wince (wasn’t even going to mention it). Anyway, so he sent me for a back x-ray and when I came back into his office he had my website up, haha! Brilliant!
Lovely guy. Anyway, apparently the numbness is due to an inflamed nerve resulting from the constant pounding. This freaked me out completely however apparently it isn’t serious. But, he did say that my achilles was more worrisome and it wasn’t in a very good state. Rubbish, heart sinks.
But not as bad as I initially thought (hopefully). He’s recommended 3 more rest days and anti-inflammatories. Then hopefully I’ll be able to run again. Fingers crossed.
For the numbness, feeling should return over time, again fingers crossed.
So, basically I’m stuck for a few days and feeling quite frustrated. I was trying to kid myself that my foot was okay but in reality isn’t not getting better and in fact getting a little bit worse.
This also means that finishing this challenge before Christmas by foot isn’t going to happen. Given the added kilometers in France (avoiding the busy roads) and changing my route here, I was on a tight schedule anyway.
Maybe it’s a good thing as it takes the pressure off a little. I’m trying to convince myself that things happen for a reason even if I’m not very happy about them.
I’ll just have to see how the achilles heals. I’ll start off again on Friday with less kilometers and just keep re-evaluating. Worst comes to worst I’ll finish this challenge cycling but it’s definitely not the plan. I am however pretty determined to finish it using human power but hopefully preserving my body!
I suppose set backs are inevitable and I have to admit that over the 2,700 kilometers so far, I’m been pretty fortunate so I just need to accept and deal with it. It’s all part of the journey.
The next challenge, is keeping myself busy for another three days without moving around too much, always difficult for me!

The cathedral. As you can see the facade isn’t finished (look at the top). Apparently, this is a memorial to the great plague in the 12th century which halved Tarragona’s population from 6,000 down to 3,000. Construction was stopped because of it and never completed. Makes it quite unique really.
Dad and I took a tour of the city in this little train. We froze! (warm in the sun but other than that, brrrr)
And then warmed up with coffee here in the sun, lovely.
